Origin: Ethiopia

Region: Jimma

Varietal: JARC 74112

Processing: Washed

Tasting notes: Peach, brown sugar, white tea, honeysuckle

The Process:

Washed processing involves de-pulping the coffee cherry. A bladed tool is used to cut open the cherries, extract the seeds and discard the empty fruit. The coffee is then soaked in water to soften the seed and typically is left to ferment for 12 to 72 hours. Afterwards the coffee is washed clean of any remaining fruit, mucilage and silverskin before it’s finally dried. Washed coffees are the most common processed coffees you’ll see!

Behind the Producer:

Altitude: 1780 masl

Farm: Telila, Atoma washing station

Owner: Mike Mamo

About the farm: Telila Washing Station is situated near Kecho Anderacha in Gera Woreda. Owned by Mike Mamo, Telila Washing Station was founded in 2019 with a focus on quality control and experimentation. Like most washing stations in Ethiopia, Telila takes coffee cherries from local smallholders but where Telila differs is in Mike’s focus on controlling the separation of coffee cherries at the mill. In 2022, Mike and his team opened a second washing station nearby called Atoma. During the first season of operation, Atoma only produced naturally processed coffee but as of the 2023-2024 harvest, it now produces washed and honey lots, just like its sister station!

Why we’re stoked!

This coffee is very special because of the over a decade long partnership it has with our importing partner who suggested this coffee to us! When we tried it, it jumped off the cupping table and we knew we had to have it. While this coffee has strong relational ties it’s new in the Little Bear line up but hopefully you’ll see it for many years to come!
